FAQ

  • Your first meeting with Harbor Financial is about getting to know you.

We believe great financial planning starts with listening. We want to understand your family, your goals, your concerns, your dreams, and what keeps you awake at night. Whether you're planning for retirement, building wealth, saving for college, navigating a career change, or preparing for life's unexpected moments, we take the time to truly hear your story.

We'll discuss your current financial picture, answer your questions, explain our planning process, and determine whether we're the right fit for one another. There is no pressure and no obligation.

As a second-generation, family-owned financial planning firm, we believe our clients deserve the same care, honesty, and attention we would give our own family. That's the Harbor Financial difference.

  • Life is full of financial decisions, and having a trusted advisor can help you make those decisions with greater confidence.

As advisors we do much more than manage investments. We help clients create comprehensive financial plans that include retirement planning, investment management, tax-aware strategies, insurance planning, education funding, estate planning coordination, wealth preservation and legacy building.

Most importantly, we become a long-term partner who helps keep your financial life aligned with your goals as life changes.

  • You don't need to be wealthy to benefit from professional financial planning.

Many people seek guidance when they're preparing for retirement, receiving an inheritance, changing careers, selling a business, growing their family, or simply wanting more confidence about their financial future.

If you're asking yourself, "Am I making the right financial decisions?" or "Could I be doing more?" It's probably a great time to speak with a financial planner.

  • We provide comprehensive financial planning and wealth management designed around your unique goals.

Some clients come to us with significant investment portfolios, while others simply want guidance making smart financial decisions for their future.

Our first conversation helps determine whether we're a good fit and how we can best help you move toward your financial goals.

  • We believe transparency builds trust.  Our first meeting is a complimentary consultation where we find out what you may need and if we can be of service to you.  We'll clearly explain how we're compensated before we ever work together. You'll understand exactly what services you're receiving and how those services are paid for so you can make informed decisions with confidence.

  • Don't worry about bringing everything.

    Helpful documents may include:

    • Recent investment statements

If you don't have everything together, that's okay. The first meeting is primarily about getting to know one another.

  • Financial planning isn't a one-time event—it's an ongoing relationship.

Most clients meet with us regularly to review progress, discuss life changes, evaluate investment strategies, and update their financial plan as needed. We're also available whenever important questions or life events arise.

A rule of thumb at minimum would be to do an annual check-in.

  • Absolutely.

Our goal is to help you retire with confidence—not uncertainty.

People often think planning ends at retirement, but in truth retired people face ongoing financial decisions and can benefit from having an advisor.

  • Yes. While we don't refinance or service student loans, we can help you understand how student loan debt fits into your overall financial plan.

At Harbor Financial, we look at the bigger picture. We'll help you evaluate how your student loan payments affect your cash flow, savings, retirement contributions, home-buying goals, and other financial priorities. Together, we'll create a strategy that balances paying down debt while continuing to build long-term financial security.

Whether you're a recent graduate, a parent helping a child with education expenses, or someone managing graduate school loans, we'll help you make informed decisions that support your overall financial goals.

Every situation is different, which is why we take the time to listen, understand your priorities, and develop a personalized financial plan that's right for you and your family.

  • A 529 college savings plan is a tax-advantaged investment account designed to help families save for future education expenses. Funds in a 529 plan grow tax-deferred, and qualified withdrawals are generally tax-free when used for eligible education expenses, including college, graduate school, vocational training, and, in some cases, K–12 tuition.

At Harbor Financial, we help parents, grandparents, and other family members determine whether a 529 plan fits into their overall financial strategy. We'll discuss how much to save, investment options, tax benefits, and how a college savings plan works alongside your retirement goals and other financial priorities.

  • The answer depends on your family's unique circumstances. We'll help you create a balanced plan that supports your children's future while protecting your own financial security.

As a second-generation, family-owned financial planning firm, we understand that investing in the next generation is about more than paying for college—it's about creating opportunities and building a lasting family legacy.

  • Trump Accounts are tax-advantaged investment accounts for children under age 18. Eligible U.S. children born between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028 may qualify for a one-time $1,000 federal contribution, and families can contribute up to $5,000 per year to help build long-term savings. The account is held in the child's name, with a parent or guardian serving as custodian until the child reaches age 18.

Like many financial planning decisions, whether a Trump Account is right for your family depends on your goals and overall financial situation. It may be one of several savings options to consider alongside 529 college savings plans, retirement savings, and other investment strategies.

At Harbor Financial, we don't believe in one-size-fits-all recommendations. We'll help you understand how a Trump Account works, compare it with other savings vehicles, and determine whether it makes sense as part of your family's overall financial plan.

As a second-generation, family-owned financial planning firm, our goal is to help families make thoughtful decisions that create opportunities for future generations. Together, we'll build a strategy that supports your children, grandchildren, and your long-term financial goals.

  • The right amount of life insurance depends on your family's unique needs. We consider factors such as income replacement, outstanding debts, mortgage balance, education costs, childcare expenses, retirement savings, and your family's future financial goals. Our goal is to help ensure your loved ones remain financially secure if something unexpected happens.

  • Receiving an inheritance can bring both opportunity and uncertainty. Before making any major financial decisions, it's important to take time to understand your options. Depending on your goals, you may consider paying down debt, investing for long-term growth, increasing emergency savings, planning for retirement, or preserving assets for future generations. We'll help you create a thoughtful plan that honors both your financial future and the legacy you've received.

  • There's no one-size-fits-all answer. The best decision depends on factors such as your mortgage interest rate, retirement goals, tax considerations, investment timeline, cash flow needs, and overall financial picture. We'll help you evaluate the advantages and trade-offs so you can make an informed decision that's right for you.

  • Business owners have unique retirement planning opportunities that can provide significant tax advantages while helping them build long-term wealth. Depending on your business structure, options may include SEP IRAs, SIMPLE IRAs, Solo 401(k)s, Safe Harbor 401(k)s, profit-sharing plans, and defined benefit plans. We'll help you choose the retirement strategy that fits your business, your employees, and your future goals.
